Iowa Gravel Series

Capturing the Energy of the Iowa Gravel Series – Kalona Edition

Photos from Kalona Horseshoe

Over the weekend, I traveled to eastern Iowa to a charming little town called Kalona to photograph the kickoff race of the Iowa Gravel Series. This was the first event of the season, and I have to say—it’s one of the most well-organized amateur cycling races I’ve ever attended.

Having raced across the country in the early 2000s, I’ve seen my fair share of events. Few have matched the level of professionalism and community spirit that the Iowa Gravel Series brings to the table. From start to finish, the staff and volunteers made sure everyone was having a good time—whether they were racing hard or simply enjoying a scenic ride through the rolling Iowa countryside.

What really stood out to me, beyond the race itself, was the welcoming atmosphere. It’s clear that this series is built not just for competition, but for community. Riders of all levels felt at home, and that’s something special.

I’ll be shooting six out of the seven events this season, and I’m excited to share the photos and stories that come from each one. If the Kalona race is any indication, it’s going to be a fantastic season.

Stay tuned—there’s a lot more gravel, grit, and great moments to come.

Thank you to Chris and his team for putting on the Iowa Gravel Series. If you haven’t signed up for one of their events I highly recommend it.
